18] Yaksha Prashna : For what ultimate purpose does one give away in charity to the Brahmanas (pious)? To the Artists of dance and theatre? To the Workers? And to the Kings (rulers)?

Yudhisthira Answers : It is for the sake of dharma that charity is given to the Brahmanas. It is for the sake of fame and glory arising out of patronage that wealth is given to Artists. It is for their livelihood that money is given to the Workers. And it is for sake of fear of attack that tributes are given to the Kings.

——————————————————————————————————————————
19] Yaksha Prashna : What is that by which the world is enveloped? What is that factor which prevents one from discovering oneself? What is the reason because of which friends are forsaken? What is it that obstructs one from attaining the Higher State (Mukti)?

Yudhisthira Answers : The world is enveloped by Maya (ignorance). It is spiritual ignorance that prevents one from realizing oneself. It is because of greed that friends are forsaken. Attachment or moha is the obstacle on the path to the Higher State.

——————————————————————————————————————————
20] Yaksha Prashna : What is it that obstructs progress and growth for an individual? For a country? What makes Shraadha (the rituals performed for ancestors) fruitless? When does a Yagna become null and void?

Yudhisthira Answers : Miserliness in thought and action obstructs progress for an individual. The absence of a good leader cannot make a country grow and become prosperous. Shraadha performed by a priest devoid of knowledge and practice is fruitless. A yagna is null and void when it is performed without charity.

——————————————————————————————————————————
21] Yaksha Prashna : What is the path to be taken in life? What is the source of water? What constitutes annam (prosperity)? And what is detrimental (poison) to life? What is the right time for Shraadha (Pitr karya)?

Yudhisthira Answers : The path walked by men of character and wisdom is the path to be taken by all. The clouds (sky) are the source of water. Cattle or Wealth constitutes annam (prosperity). Cowardice is detrimental (poison) in one’s life. The right time for Pitr karya is when an individual well-versed in the sastras and performing noble actions is available for officiating the rituals.

——————————————————————————————————————————
22] Yaksha Prashna : What are the characteristics of asceticism? What are the characteristics of one who has his mind under control? What are the prominent features of forbearance? And that of modesty?

Yudhisthira Answers : To be rooted in one’s own inherent nature (swadharma) is asceticism. Self-restraint is the characteristics of one who has controlled his mind. The prominent features of forbearance is the capacity to endure all pairs of opposites like pain and pleasure. Modesty is refraining from all evil and impure acts.

——————————————————————————————————————————
23] Yaksha Prashna : What constitutes knowledge? What constitutes tranquility? What is supreme compassion? What is meant by the term straight-forward?

Yudhisthira Answers : An insight into the divinity within each one of us constitutes real knowledge. The peaceful state of the mind is tranquility. To act for the well-being of all is true compassion. Equanimity and balance of the mind is to be straightforward.

Squirrel’s Seva in building Rama Setu!

Lord Rama, Lakshmana and the Vanara army reached the shores of the ocean. They had to cross the ocean to reach Lanka and vanquish Ravana. Rama prayed to the lord of the ocean who in turn suggested that they build a bridge across the ocean, and he would help hold the rocks together.

Building a bridge with rocks! The rocks will sink in water! Jambavan, the chief of the bears suggested that if Hanuman can cross the ocean with the strength of the name of the Lord – RAMA, surely rocks with Rama Nama written on them would float!

All the mighty and strong vanaras engaged themselves in building the long bridge with the help of rocks and trees. They would bring huge rocks and Hanuman would write RAMA on them, and then they would toss it into the waters. Sure the rocks floated!

A little squirrel was observing all this. Everyone was engaged in the service of Lord Rama. It also wanted to serve the Lord. But how could a tiny little creature like the squirrel help in carrying huge rocks. It did not know what to do. The bushy-tailed squirrel sat down thinking very seriously in what way it can help.

Suddenly its little eyes were filled with tears. It stood up on its hind legs and held its fore limbs across its chest and exclaimed, “the hard rocks with pointed edges will sure hurt my beloved Lord’s delicate and soft feet. And inbetween the rocks, there are gaping holes which are not at all comfortable to walk on. And the rough bark of the trees will surely hurt the Lord’s feet”.

After a few minutes of thought, the squirrel suddenly knew what to do! It scurried along quickly across the shore, dipped itself in water, came back and rolled itself over in the sand. Then it ran quickly on to the bridge and shook its body so vigorously that all the sand fell on the rocks. Again and again it repeated this process.

As it was darting to and fro, running here and there, it almost got crushed when it came under feet of a Vanara. Angrily, the Vanara shouted at the squirrel to stay away from them all, otherwise it would lose its life. The squirrel looked up and told them that it also wanted to serve Lord Rama in building the bridge. “Please do not deprive me of this sacred seva to the Lord, brother vanara,” implored the squirrel. Hearing this, the Vanaras laughed. How could a little squirrel help in building the huge bridge across the ocean? One of the Vanaras picked it up and tossed it a few yards away so that it would again not cross their path. The squirrel cried, “Rama!” The Lord heard its cry, got up and stretched His hand out. The squirrel came and softly landed on the Lord’s palm. It was safe in His hands!

The Lord realized what had happened. He advised the Vanaras never to underestimate the service of anyone – big or small. It is the attitude or bhava which ultimately decides the nobility and beauty of the work executed. It was infact the grains of sand that cemented the rocks and held them together, and rendered the surface more comfortable to walk on.

In recognition of its seva, and acknowledging the same, the Lord held the squirrel in His palm and softly ran His three fingers on the furry back of the squirrel. Lo! there were three white stripes on the back of the squirrel! To this day the three white stripes seen on the back of squirrels is attributed to Lord Sri Rama as a reminder that no seva is insignificant!

The Glory of Lakshmi-Narayana!

The devatas and the rakshasas came together to churn the great milk ocean. The Mandara mountain was used as the churning rod and Vasuki, the serpent was the rope. Lord Sri Hari took the form of a koorma (tortoise) to support the huge churning rod. As the churning went on, right in the beginning, Halahala, the deadly poison came out which was consumed by Lord Sadashiva for the welfare of all . After that, the milk ocean brought forth many beautiful and precious things and beings from within itself.

As the churning continued, Goddess Lakshmi appeared from the milk ocean. She was fair in complexion, youthful in appearance, graceful and verily the personification of divine beauty and virtues! All the devatas and even the rakshasas longed for her as their companion. With the Goddess of Beauty, Fortune, Wealth and Prosperity with them, there is nothing whatsoever that anyone can long for beyond this!

The King of Gods, Indra brought a beautiful throne for her. The rivers Ganga, Saraswati, Yamuna, Narmada, Sindu, Kaveri, Godavari brought sacred waters in golden vessels for her ablution. Mother Earth provided rare and unique herbs and the cows yielded fresh and sweet milk for the same. Vasanta, the deity of Spring season offered beautiful, fresh and fragrant flowers and fruits. The Rishis and Seers laid down the procedure for her abhishekam according to the sastras. Gandharvas, the celestial musicians sang auspicious songs and their wives and Apsaras danced. The heavenly instruments like the flute, veena, conch, drums were sounded by the deities-in-charge of the clouds.

The great and mighty elephants guarding the four directions performed the abhishekam with waters from the golden vessels to the accompaniment of hymns chanted by the brahmanas. Samudra (ocean) gave her apparels woven with golden threads. Lord Varuna presented her with a Vaijayanti garland. Viswakarma, the celestial craftsman presented beautiful ornaments and Saraswati offered her a pearl necklace. Brahma offered her a lotus and Nagas presented her a pair of beautiful ear-rings.

Then with a beautiful garland of fragrant fresh flowers with bees humming and hovering over the flowers in her hands, and with a charming smile on her face, resplendent like a streak of lightning, Sridevi moved forward with a graceful gait accompanied by the soft and melodious tinkling sound of her golden anklets, searching for the person of her choice – One who in Himself and by Himself is All-Full – Paripoorna.

All the devatas waited in eager anticipation, but none of them suited her. Far…far away from all of them, she saw the Person of her choice! Sri Narayana was standing there – an embodiment of Auspiciousness and divine Virtues, All-full and Contented, the Bestower of Bhukti and Mukti. Established in His own glory, He was totally unconcerned and supremely indifferent. There wasn’t even an inkling of longing or craving whatsoever in Him for her. He was almost turned the other way!

The Goddess of Fortune, full of bashfulness, step by step slowly went up to the Lord and placed the garland over His neck and thereby chose Sri Hari as Her husband – He who is Ever-independent of everything and every being. Narayana, smilingly acknowledged her, who was none other than His own Sakti; and His bosom became her permanent abode.

The gods chanted sacred chants, the celestial musicians sang beautiful songs. The sound of the mangala-vadya reverberated in all directions. There were showers of flowers from the heavens.
Salutations to Hari who is known as Srivallabha! Salutations to Sri who is known as Harivallabhe! Salutations again and again to the Divine Couple: LakshmiNarayana!

Hold on to Narayana; Lakshmi can never be far away. Wealth with character alone can bring joy, peace and prosperity. When one is kind and sincere, alert and consistent, he attracts to himself wealth and glory. - Swami Chinmayananda

Radha and Krishna’s Flute!

Once when Radha and Krishna were on the banks of the river Yamuna, Krishna told Radha that his stay in Vrindavan was almost coming to an end and he would have to proceed to Mathura. There was a greater role for him to play of protecting the good and annihilating the wicked – the purpose of Lord’s Avatar. Radha unable to bear the separation from her Lord was totally shattered. The Lord consoled her saying that he would get her a flute the next day, and also teach her how to play it. Whenever she wanted, at any given time, she could play the flute and invoke him.

Hearing this, Radha pointed out to the divine flute “Aakarshini” or “Aanandini” which Krishna had in his hand. Radha questioned Him as to why she could not learn playing the flute the very same day using the flute which Krishna had in his hand. Krishna smiled and said that when the empty and hollow reed in His hands allows His breath to flow through it, the divine music that emanates from His flute would not only stir and awaken the whole universe, but attract and draw to itself all his true bhaktas. Hence Radha could only play on a different flute which would invoke Krishna alone. Radha wondered as to who else could be more devoted to the Lord than herself, to get drawn to Him by the music of His flute. She considered herself as the greatest of His devotees, and no one could be compared to her when it came to devotion to the Lord. In her arrogance, she drew a line around Krishna and asked Him to play the flute.

Only those who were as devoted to Him as she was, could cross the line and come near Krishna, else they would get burnt. Krishna began to play his divine flute. The sweet music wafted around captivating and mesmerizing all – plants, animals and humans alike. All the gopis who were totally and unconditionally devoted to Krishna left the daily chores, lost their body-consciousness, and in a subtle form (subtle bodies) they reached Krishna’s Presence. To Radha’s surprise they even crossed the line drawn by her, and sat at the feet of the Lord – their beloved Lord Krishna. Radha felt humbled. Devotion in its highest and purest state is totally devoid of pride and vanity.

Krishna then told Radha that every Bhakta in this world who is truly devoted to the Lord is indeed Radha in another form. Radha herself is an embodiment of true Bhakti. Hence Bhakta and Bhagavan are inseparable!

[PS: I request all to please forward and share these value based stories rich in our culture and tradition to elders, youth and children]
