The power of “Raama Naama”

The vanaras had assembled at the southern tip of Bharath (India) all eager to cross the ocean and fight the wicked demon Ravana. Between them and Lanka stood the mighty ocean. To cross the ocean a mighty bridge was being built with the help of huge rocks.  All rocks were brought to Hanuman, and “Sri Raama” was written on each rock. Those huge rocks were then given to ‘Nala’ the commander-in-chief of the vanaras. He along with his brother Nila were responsible for building the entire bridge across the ocean.

Watching this impossible task of rocks floating on water with astonishment just by the power of His own name, Lord Raama  Himself decided to throw a small pebble in water to check if it would float. Raama took a small pebble and dropped it in the ocean and it sank which always happens when a pebble is dropped in water. The lord stood wondering why a small pebble sank when He Himself dropped it; whereas those huge rocks which had the name of “Sri Raama” written on them floated.

Hanuman had watched all the happenings and at once came to the Lord, and said that whatever happened was just right! Anything released or dropped from the Lord’s hands would sink; whether it is an inert stone or a sentient living being — if the Lord leaves us, we are sure to sink! The Lord’s hand is there always holding us and saving us from all problems and difficulties. Even if we leave Him, HE LEAVES US NOT!!

Story of Arjuna -The Power of Mantra

Dronacharya was the teacher of both the Pandavas & the Kauravas. Arjuna was indeed the best among all & hence very dear to his Guru Drona. During a class, Dronacharya was telling them about the power of mantras. When one invokes Lord Varuna (God of water) and leaves an arrow, it becomes Varun-astra bringing rain. Similarly, when Lord Agni (God of fire) is invoked by the relevant mantra, the arrow becomes Agni-astra.

Since these mantras were taught to all, Arjuna had a doubt whether their concentration was good enough to invoke the powers of the mantra when chanted. To remove the doubt of the student and to test their ability, Dronacharya decides to have a test.
He asks all his students to take pots which are sealed and fill them with water. Each pot only had a small hole – the size of a pepper. The winner would be the one who fills the pot with water first.

All of them took sealed pots and went to a nearby lake to fill it with water. Inspite of keeping the pot immersed for long, water hardly entered the pot. Arjuna’s pot also remained almost empty. He then realized that his Guru had taught him the mantra to invoke Lord Varuna and if Lord Varuna is invoked the pot would get filled automatically. Arjuna chanted the relevant mantra in order to fill the pot and the pot became filled.

All the other Pandavas & Kauravas returned back disappointed. When Dronacharya asked Arjuna about his pot, he brought the pot filled with water and told his Guru that he had invoked Lord Varuna to fill the pot.
Dronacharya being pleased asked all the others to follow the discipline and to put in effort like Arjuna.

Lord Vaidyanatha – The Healer of Diseases

Lord Vaidyanatha

The Devatas finally defeated the Asuras after long battle and returned back to the heavens. Lord Indra was worried as the Devatas were suffering greatly from the painful wounds caused by the weapons of the asuras. To find a method to heal their sufferings, Indra approached Brahaspati (Guru of the Devatas).  Seeing their plight, Brahaspathi asked them to go to earth and worship Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva is indeed the healer of all sufferings. Hence Brahaspathi asked them to go to Vaideeshwara temple and pray. (Vaideeshwara temple is situated in Tamil Nadu, about 27kms from Chidambaram. Here Lord Shiva is worshipped as Lord Vaidyanatha, the universal doctor).

As instructed, the Gods of the heavens rushed to Vaideeshwara temple and prayed to Lord Shiva seeking the Lord’s grace and blessing to remove their pain and sufferings from the wounds.

Pleased with their prayers, Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati at once started from Kailasa to Vaideeswara temple riding on Nandi. Lord Shiva went to the temple in guise of a doctor and Devi accompanied Him as His helper. Lord Shiva took some medicine from the casket which Devi had in her hand and applied it to the wounds of the Devas. The wounds immediately disappeared and all the Devatas were completely healed.

Lo! Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati appeared in their true form and blessed all the Devatas. The Devatas offered pearls to Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati as an offering. Devi Parvati gave it to her son Lord Subramanya, and he adorned it. From then, Lord Subramanya came to be known as “Muthukumaraswami”.

Lord Shiva then proclaimed that the soil of this place which healed the wounds of the Devatas will be given to the devotees as Prasad. This Prasad will become famous as a cure for all diseases.

Benefits of Chanting Vishnu Sahasranama

Vishnu Sahasranama is known as Stotra Raja. This stotra contains the power of all the Devatas. Therefore, when this Stotra is chanted, we are invoking the grace and blessings of all the Devatas. It also generates enormous Spiritual
Vibrations which are beneficial to us.

  • Vishnu Sahasranama bestows on us knowledge, peace, prosperity, wealth, health, welfare, values (good qualities), fame, memory, including Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha.
  • It destroys our worldly bondages. It is a healer of all diseases (physical & mental). It protects us from the adverse effects of the planets.
  • It is the essence of all the shastras (sarva shastra saara) and hence becomes a doorway to salvation. It is indeed the best Yagna (Japa Yagna). Hence no grave calamity can ever happen to a person who chants Vishnu Sahasranama with devotion.
  • The names of the Lord is the best choice to choose a name for our children.
  • Sage Madhvacharya says that Vedas can be interpreted in three ways, the Mahabharata in ten different ways, but the names of the Lord have a hundred different meanings (interpretations)!

  • Chanting Vishnu Sahasranama once with true Bhakti is equivalent to visiting a thousand Vishnu Kshetras.
  • If one has nakshatra or navagraha dosha, the best remedy is to chant Vishnu Sahasranama.
There are 27 nakshatras and each nakshatra has 4 padas.
27*4 = 108 – which is equal to the number of verses in Vishnu Sahasranama. Therefore, there is ‘ONE’ specific verse in the Vishnu Sahasranama for every individual belonging to a particular nakshatra – pada.
Also there are specific verses to help us to improve our memory, acquire noble qualities, eliminate finance problems , improve health,
better relationships at home, to acquire inner peace etc.
  • Also Vishnu Sahasranama belongs to the Rig Veda where there are 1000 slokas called Brihati Sahasra. Each verse has 36 swaras and 36 vyanjanas – hence 72 aksharas.
Hence 72*1000 slokas equals 72000 aksharas which equals 72000 naadis in the human body.
Hence Vishnu Sahasranama becomes the greatest healer which energises all the 72000 naadis in our human body.
